MAIN LEAGUE GAMES AT PATERSON FLATS PLAYED 30/9/2018

The season kicked off with Dave against Colin. As always, this was a tight game which highlighted two contrasting styles. Colin tried to use faster play to create chances, the best of which was saved by a well placed goalkeeper. Dave managed to 'grind out' his best chance late on, but was beaten by the clock before he could take advantage.

Dave Collett 0 v 0 Colin Fletcher

The next game saw the first goal of the season. Colin was warmed up by now, and faced Rob in a very open game. Rob had a chance from a free kick following a hand-ball, but the shot was well saved. The winner was scored in the 19th minute and Colin is the seasons early pace setter!

Rob Paterson 0 v 1 Colin Fletcher

Although this ended score-less, it was a far more open game than the season opener. Both players hit the woodwork and both had other close calls as well, but neither could find the shot that mattered.

Rob Paterson 0 v 0 Dave Collett

MAIN LEAGUE GAMES AT THE DIO FLETCHER STADIUM PLAYED 9/12/2018

Mike can count himself unlucky not to have open his account with a win although chances were few and far between. Mike rattled the crossbar/post on 3 occasions. Rob had two good chances from long throws and shots on the run but in the end the honours were even.

Rob Paterson 0 v 0 Mike Parnaby

Jeff came out on top in this fascinating contest with a well taken goal midway through the second half with a low shot into the corner and taking advantage of a poor block flick from Colin. Colin then laid siege to Jeff’s goal and hit the post on 3 occasions in a frantic final 5 minutes and could rue these gilt-edged chances come the end of the season.

Colin Fletcher 0 v 1 Jeff Parsons

Colin found himself fortunate with his first two goals just before halftime when both of his shots found the net after hitting the post and rebounding into the goal off the back of Mike’s goalkeeper. Colin continued to dominate in the second half and increased his lead in the 25th minute with a low shot into the corner of the goal.Mike continued to press forward for a consolation goal and was rewarded 3 minutes from time. At this stage Colin should have shut up shot but was probably a little too greedy in the hunt for a fourth goal and was caught napping when Mike scored his second 16 seconds from time.

Colin Fletcher 3 v 2 Mike Parnaby

As always a close encounter with chances two a minimum throughout.Rob could have scored just before the break but his shot carried too much weight and flew over the crossbar. The second half was just as tight but Rob managed to pull out a good save from Jeff’s keeper just before the end and at this stage both players seemed content in settling for a draw.

Birmingham & District Table Soccer Association 00 League

00 LEAGUE GAMES AT FIRHILL PLAYED 25/11/2018

This season’s 00 championship got underway at Firhill in Guisborough with the defending champion Colin, taking on Jeff. Both players used the ‘light-weight’ version of the allowed player types. It was a very tight game throughout. Colin showed some great touches and made his team very adaptable with slides and curls. Jeff used his tactical nouce to keep Colin at bay. The game ended without a goal, and I suspect both players will be happy not to lose!

Colin Fletcher 0 v 0 Jeff Parsons

The next game saw Colin take on Mike. In contrast to the others, Mike used a heavy-weight version of the 00 teams. By now, Colin was fully warmed up whereas Mike paid the price for not having practiced with a team type he has not used for at least 20 years! Colin scored early on and added a second to wrap up the win, as easy a win as he will ever get against a disappointing Mike. So, the Champion starts he defence well!

Mike Parnaby 0 v 2 Colin Fletcher

The final game saw Jeff take on Mike. Both players struggled to make an impact with these players and the game became scrappy at times with Colin calling “Miss, Miss, Miss” as the players tried to hit the ball. Lady luck was not with Mike today and whatever chances he did create he failed to convert, missing some shots by a good way. Jeff was being held at bay, but saw his chance from a throw in. A long throw and a shot on the run found the net and that was all it took.

Mike Parnaby 0 v 1 Jeff Parsons

00 GAMES PLAYED AT ROWLEY ON 16th DECEMBER 2018.

Dave returned to his original 1960s bases but this time with the small ball and a 45 year gap. But the skills were still there as he pressurised Colin’s defence for great lengths forcing corners. But Colin is the one adept at breaking out quickly and four minutes before halftime one of these breakaways forced Dave to a touched block and Colin slotted in the opening goal. The play the second half saw Dave never say die and continued to force many corner but the truth is that he plays it slow, very block-able and the bases just cannot lift over defenders. But what the pressure did do was force Colin to unusual errors. Two free kicks near the end; one of them for spare goalkeeper taken from the wrong position, and the crucial second for a save outside the area upset Colin’s rhythm and from the resulting free kick Dave converted the equaliser.

Colin Fletcher 1 v 1 Dave Collett

Great control of these bases from both players. Spins abound, tactics saw both defences on top. Dave had the more attacking play but accurate deflecting blocking and great goalkeeper reactions was Jeff’s forte. Dave hit the post three times but all planned; the goalkeeper starting mostly from the goal line was there each time if need be.

Jeff Parsons 0 v 0 Dave Collett

Colin may just have the edge with the OO in the league so far but the first half was very equally fought. It was all about taking chances. One chance Jeff after 8 minutes - very direct, aim for far post rebound and he is 1-0 up. Colin responded and within five minutes he was level and could have gone in at halftime but the referee disallowed his strange goal. Tiredness set in the second half with Jeff incurring quite a few free kicks. Colin pressurised but Jeff’s defence held and when not, the goalkeeper either had a lucky charm or was just unbeatable. We are not sure.

Jeff Parsons 1 v 1 Colin Fletcher

Colin is looking favourite to win, because overall he appears to have just a bit more consistency with these figures but nobody would put money on Mike or Dave not stopping him in his remaining two games. One victory in four games is better than nothing of course but may not be enough to clinch the title with the others ready to pounce.
